Kids off the Block 'Top 10 CNN Hero 2011'
Surrounded by gang violence in her Chicago neighborhood, Diane Latiker opened her home to area youth and started a community program called Kids Off the Block. Since 2003, Latiker's nonprofit has taught valuable life skills and provided recreational activities to more than 1,500 young people.
Kids Off The Block has made a commitment to the youth in our communities. We will guide you, respect you, care for you, love you, provide a safe place for you, build a relationship with you, listen to you, and help you to succeed.
To provide at-risk low income youth positive alternatives to gangs, drugs, truancy, violence, and the juvenile justice system. Kids Off The Block has been featured on AL-Jazeera, CNN, The Guardian, and Fox News. Anderson Cooper 360, The Don Lemon Show, ABC-7, The Chicago Sun-Times, The Chicago Tribune, and many other media.
